FAQ

How do I apply for your residency?

We're a self-funded residency, which means artists pay for their stay, travel costs, and food. We're happy to provide an invitation letter for artists to apply for funding. You can find prices and availability here

Do I need a car, and is a 4x4 necessary?

We definitely recommend renting a car since we're in a remote area with no public transport available. While we understand that renting a vehicle can be an extra expense, it truly enhances your experience by allowing you to explore the beautiful surroundings at your own pace, with so many amazing places to see.

Additionally, the nearest grocery store is about a 25-minute drive away, so having a car is, in our opinion, crucial.

If you’re visiting between April and October, a regular city car is sufficient for reaching us. However, if you’re feeling adventurous and plan to explore the highlands or mountains, you’ll need a 4x4, even during the summer. From November to March, we strongly recommend choosing a 4x4, as heavy snowfall is common during those months.

Can you recommend a car rental service?

Yes! We recommend Höldur Car Rental, which offers our guests a 10% discount, and Blue Car Rental, which also provides a 10% discount. Once you've booked with us, we'll share the discount codes with you.

Do you offer airport pick-up services?

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide airport pick-up services. However, we can recommend a local company that offers this service for both individuals and groups. But just do you give you a heads up, it's not cheap.

Where is the nearest grocery store?

About 25 minutes away by car, there’s a small grocery store in Ólafsvík. Within a 20-minute walk, you'll find two cafés: one open from spring to autumn (depending on the weather) and another during the summer. Both offer bakery goods, including savory soups. We recommend doing a larger grocery shop in Reykjavík or Borgarnes on your way here.

Will you check us in?

We do offer self-check-in. We'll provide you with clear instructions and a code to access the property.

Is there any public transportation available?

There is no public transportation directly to Hellnar, where we are located. However, there is one public bus connection from Reykjavik to Hellissandur. This journey takes approximately four hours and requires 3 to 4 bus transfers, costing around €45 (one way).  Please note Hellissandur is a 30-minute drive from us and you would still need to buy groceries, which means you would require a taxi for shopping, as the nearest grocery store is in Ólafsvík, about a 25-minute drive away. Therefore, we do recommend renting a car.

Is basic kitchen equipment provided?

We offer a fully equipped kitchen, including quality cookware, glassware, a coffee machine (French press), as well as essentials like salt, pepper, various spices, oil, and teas. We kindly ask that you either replenish any items you use up or let us know what needs restocking, so we can ensure everything is ready in time for the next guests

Can I book a stay for less than 2 weeks?

We encourage a minimum stay of two weeks at the studio, as this allows guests to truly immerse themselves in their work, find inspiration, or practice mindfulness, all supported by the breathtaking Icelandic landscape. However, we do make exceptions, so feel free to reach out if you have other plans. Staying longer not only deepens the experience but also fosters a connection with nature and the local community. Whether you're from abroad or Iceland, two weeks is just enough to get a taste of all that the area has to offer.

Are there any cafés or restaurants nearby?

Yes! Within a 20-minute walk, you'll find two cafés: one open from spring to autumn and another during the summer, both serving baked goods and savory soups. In Arnarstapi, just a 7-minute drive or a 40-minute walk away, there are two restaurants open year-round. Additionally, the area offers a variety of dining options, from cozy local spots to more refined restaurants and bars. We provide our guests with a detailed guide that includes recommendations for dining, sightseeing, walks, hikes, and more.

Do I need to bring my own towels or bedding?

No need to bring those - bedding, duvets, blankets, and towels are all provided

Is there Wi-Fi available, and is there phone reception?

Yes, there is both Wi-Fi and good mobile phone reception.

Is there a Washing Machine?

Yes

Are there one or two houses available?

Both the studio and the house are available for rent, either separately or together - making it ideal for group visits.

The studio has a minimum stay of 2 weeks, while the house can be rented for a minimum of 3 days, either alone or alongside the studio

How many people can the houses accommodate?

The studio accommodates 1-2 people, and the house next to it has 3 bedrooms, each with two single beds that can be combined into a double. There's also a double sofa bed in a cozy nook in the living room of the house.

In total, the space can host 8-10 people:

1-2 in the studio

6-8 in the house

with the option of 2 additional air beds

What yoga / meditations equipment do you provide?

We have the following:

  • Yoga mats: 14

  • Eye pillows: 9

  • Meditation cushions: 10

  • Bluetooth speaker: 1

  • Blankets: 15

What kind of clothing should I pack?

Icelandic weather can shift suddenly, so it's wise to carry extra layers and a wind/rain jacket at all times, even in summer.

We suggest using the layering method: start with a snug t-shirt (cotton, wool, silk), add a pullover (fleece, cotton, wool), and top it off with a jacket.

Given the consistent wind, it's advisable to have a scarf and hat on hand throughout the year. Waterproof shoes are recommended, and for walks or hikes, wind/rain-resistant trousers are a good idea.

If you don’t have outdoor gear and don’t want to invest in some, you can rent outdoor clothing at Iceland Cover.

What is the weather like throughout the year?

Spring (March to May): Average temperatures range from 0°C to 10°C (32°F to 50°F), with gradual warming throughout the season.

Summer (June to August): Average temperatures range from 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F), with occasional warmer days reaching up to 20°C (68°F).

Autumn (September to November): Average temperatures range from 0°C to 10°C (32°F to 50°F), with cooling temperatures as the season progresses.

Winter (December to February): Average temperatures range from -1°C to 5°C (30°F to 41°F), with occasional drops below freezing.

But no matter the season, it's always quite windy in Iceland, so don't forget your hat, scarf, and gloves!
